Frequently asked questions
What are New Jersey's minimum auto insurance requirements? +
NJ offers two policy forms. Basic Policy: 15/30 BI, 5K PD, 15K PIP. Standard Policy: typically 25/50 BI minimum, with 15K PIP, plus uninsured motorist required. Most drivers should hold the Standard Policy at higher limits.
What's the difference between NJ's Basic and Standard policies? +
Basic is the cheapest legal option but provides almost no liability protection (most attorneys won't take a case against a Basic Policy driver because there's nothing to collect). Standard is what most homeowners and asset-holders need.
Do NJ residents need SR-22? +
Yes — NJ does use SR-22 filings (called 'financial responsibility filings'). We file them with the NJ MVC for clients after DUIs, lapses, or other triggering events.
